 The 7th energy center of the Chakra system called the “Sahasrara” meaning thousand petal Lotus.  The colors of this divine energy center are golden white and violet hues and it is located at the crown of the head.  The energy of this chakra allows us to experience mystical oneness with everyone and everything in nature, and connects us to the universal source.  This chakra is both a giver and receiver of the energy that flows in the pools of the collective consciousness.

 

 

When this chakra IS balanced:

You feel connected to all that is. You move and groove in your highest potential.  You feel deeply spiritually led through the world knowing that you are a part of the ‘whole’.  

You trust that something bigger has got your back in life!  

When we are grounded and open in faith,  we live a life of gratitude and see the miracles all around.

There is a sense of nirvana when this energy center is wide open.

 

 

When this chakra is NOT balanced:

Life feels harder and the road is much bumpier.  Forgetting that you are a co-creator in this life closes off this chakra resulting in feeling disconnected to the world.  

Remember that no one is more spiritual than the next; the only thing that differs

THE CROWN CHAKRA

The crown chakra is the center for trust, devotion, inspiration, happiness, and positivity. It's also the center for deeper connection with ourselves and deeper connection with a force of life that is greater than ourselves. For this reason, it can be quite useful to have tools to open the crown chakra. Here are three of my favorites that will have this chakra open in no time! 

 

1. Get inspired. 

One way to open the crown chakra is through inspiration. For example, think of a music concert that you attended or a song you love. Remember how that made you feel. If you enjoyed the concert or song you probably felt uplifted, inspired, open and positive. That is the feeling of the open crown. To open the crown chakra you can listen to inspiring music, take a walk in nature, read an uplifting poem, or see a gorgeous sunset. Anything that brings you inspiration will open your crown chakra. Take a moment to reflect on what brings you inspiration. Be sure to include some inspiration in your daily life in order to keep the crown chakra open. 

 

2. Practice affirmations 

A second way to open the crown chakra is through the use of inspiring affirmations. For example, repeat this affirmation to yourself: 

I am open and expanded. 
I expand my idea of what is possible. 
As I expand my idea of what is possible, I help to bring it in.
I am open and expanded. 

Become aware now of the open, expanded feeling at the top of your head. Again, this is the feeling of the open crown chakra. Repeat inspiring affirmation through out the day as a way to keep the crown chakra open. 

 

3. Visualize. 

A third way to open the crown chakra is through visualization. Take a moment now and image a golden orb of light filling the top of your head. See this golden orb of light growing and expanding. Imagine it is elevating your thoughts and filling you with a feeling of positivity. Imagine streams of golden light coming from the top of your head, connecting you up into the heavens. Feel an open and expanded feeling at the top of your head. Feel your oneness and unity with all of life. Feel your connection to a force of life greater than yourself. Affirm: I am connected to a force of life greater than myself. Feel this connection and know that you are never alone. 

As you hold this vision you are helping to open the crown chakra and strengthening your connection with a force of life that is greater than yourself. 

 

As you can see, learning to open your crown chakra is a very valuable tool. Work with these tools daily in order to feel greater inspiration, trust, positivity, and connection to a force of life that is greater than your self.

You have arrived at the 6th Chakra located at the center of the forehead, called Ajna in sanskrit meaning “perception”.  This is the energy center where BIG visions come together and you begin to tap into your inner psychic.  The third eye is the seat of our spiritual awareness and wisdom, in this center you not only ’see’ what is going on but you also ‘know’ what it means through your intuition.

 

When our third eye IS balanced:

We experience high mental ability. We are able to separate between reality and imagination and best combine logic and emotion. When we live with a balanced Third Eye chakra, we experience clear thinking and focus. A healthy third eye chakra will encourage intuition, empathy of others and build trust in oneself.  This energy center is the truth seer.  We gain clarity when we ’see’ and ‘know’ the truth.  We all hold the power to be intuitive.  The only thing that keeps you from your own inner knowing is your ability to see things for what they are.  When you are clear in this energy center not only to you see reality but also when connected and meditative can begin to visualize the future. It allows us to cut through illusion and access deeper truths seeing beyond the mind, beyond the words… When you are seeing beautiful versions of your life then that is what you create!

When this chakra is fully activated, both hemispheres of the brain function in synchrony. The right hemisphere’s creativity and synthetic thinking is integrated and balanced with left hemisphere's logical and analytical thinking.

 

 

When your third eye is NOT balanced:

  We experience fatigue, day dreaming, sleep problems, lack of assertiveness, inability to listen to others, and may even often feel disoriented. When the Chakra is over active, you may immerse in a world of fantasy and even experience hallucinations.  When this chakra is off balance you may jump to conclusions or have a hard time seeing the big picture.  I may be a real issue in all areas of your life coming from a block in this energy center. Negative thoughts consume you AND If you are ’seeing’ worrisome situations in your life then that is what you tend to manifest in your life.  You may also experience headaches or migraines, dizziness, forgetfulness and feeling like “ our head is in the sand” due to an inbalance in this energy center.

Let's talk about the pineal gland and how to care for your Third Eye. 

Straight from Wikipedia, the biological aspect of the pineal gland defines it as “a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces the serotonin derivative melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal functions. Its shape resembles a tiny pine cone (hence its name), and it is located near the centre of the brain, between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where the two rounded thalamic bodies join.” Also on Wikipedia, it notes that it is also called the pineal body, epiphysis cerebri, epiphysis, conarium or the Third Eye, with the latter being the aspect most spiritually-minded people focus on. This Third Eye activates when exposed to light, and has a number of biological functions in controlling the bio-rhythms of the body. It works in harmony with the hypothalamus gland which directs the body’s thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines our aging process. All in all, a very important gland! 

 

For a long time, the biological role of the pineal gland remained unknown, but mystical traditions and esoteric schools long held this area in the middle of the brain to be the connecting link between the physical and spiritual worlds. In this spiritual aspect, it is a necessary step to awaken the Third Eye, which will feel like a pressure at the base of the brain. It is important because activating it is to raise one’s frequency and moving into higher consciousness – all is a consciousness experience perceived through the Eye of Time or Third Eye. The Third Eye is considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, and because of this, the pineal gland has been seen as a gateway that leads within to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. Awakening the third eye acts as a “stargate.” So how do you activate it? Meditation, visualization yoga, and all forms of out of body travel open the Third Eye and is held to allow a person to see things that are beyond the physical. 

A list of the benefits and abilities the Third Eye brings include clarity, concentration, perspicuity, bliss, intuition, decisiveness and insight, as well as:

However, if a person is not taking care of her Third Eye, all of this is cut off from her. Calcification of the pineal gland will definitely occur without regular detox. Most people’s pineal glands are heavily calcified by the time they are 17 years old, so much so that they show up as a lump of calcium during an MRI. Calcification is the build up of calcium phosphate crystals in various parts of the body. This process occurs because of toxins in everyday products, like fluoride (found in public water systems and toothpaste), hormones and additives (found in processed foods), and sugars and artificial sweeteners (found pretty much everywhere). There is some speculation that cell phones are also part of the problem, thanks to high concentrations of radiation. And a closed Third Eye is no joke. In Hindu tradition, it is known as “Anja Chakra” and is credited with bringing confusion, uncertainty, cynicism, pessimism, jealousy, envy and one sidedness to a person’s life. 

The good news is that there’s something you can do about it. Just because your pineal gland is calcified doesn’t mean the door can’t be reopened. With continual care, you will free your pineal gland in no time. Here are eight things to keep in mind: 

 

1. Avoid Fluoride: pay close attention to the water in your life. Tap water, cooking with tap water, fluoridated toothpaste are all obvious no-nos. However, other bad influences include inorganic fruits and vegetables, red meat, and any sodas and artificial drinks, because they are produced with impure water, as well. It doesn’t just apply to what you ingest, either! Taking showers without a filter can be detrimental, as well. Going cold turkey from all these things can be tough, so you can begin with any of these things and slowly work your way up. 

 

2. Try a Pineal Gland Detoxifier and/or Stimulant: hydrilla verticillata, chlorella, spirulina, blue-green algae, Iodine, zeolite, ginseng, borax, D3, bentonite clay, chlorophyll, and blue skate liver oil are all ingredients that will help your pineal gland begin to purify once again. 

 

3. Add These to Your Diet: raw cacao, goji berries, garlic, cilantro, citric acid (i.e. lots of lemons, such as consuming regularly with water), watermelon, bananas, honey, coconut oil, hemp seeds, seaweed, and noni juice are fuel for your Third Eye, as they have natural detoxifying and body-nourishing properties. Raw apple cider vinegar is also a key food, as it is filled with malic acid; be sure to consume it raw. Some ways to ingest it include drinking with purified water, 8 tablespoons of ACV, and 2 tablespoons raw, local honey. You will notice a surefire health effect, as well! 

 

4. Start Using Essentials Oils: many can be used to help stimulate the pineal gland and facilitate states of spiritual awareness, meditation, astral projection, and so on. Good choices include lavender, sandalwood, frankincense, parsley, davana, pine, pink lotus, and mugwort (a word of caution regarding mugwort: excess use of Mugwort has a neurotoxin effect if inhaled directly, so be careful!). Essential oils can be inhaled directly, burned in a diffuser or nebulizer, and added to bath water.

This is the energy center that governs our speech and creative expression in the world.  The Throat Chakra is called Vishudda in sanskrit and it is known as the purification center.  

It is through this energy center that we speak our truth.  Clear communication from your heart and from your intuitive centers create a vibration of expression that is purely YOU.  This Chakra is also about listening to others and to your own inner voice that is accessed in silence.

 

 

When your Throat Chakra IS balanced:

You will have no problem expressing yourself in the world!  You will be very creative and helpful, and when connected to your heart chakra you will be good at offering advice to others both verbal and through active listening.  You are not afraid to speak your weaknesses and people respect you for this.  You experience freedom when you speak your truth. Public speaking is effortless for you and you love to express your insights.  Honesty and truth help you feel pure.  This chakra is sound vibration and resonance.  Resonance abounds where the vibrations of similar frequencies lock into rhythm with each other.  When you resonate with someone or something, whether it is a piece of music, art, or a person, you experience that with greater harmony, energy and clarity.

 

We create our own music when our throat chakra is balanced 

 

When your throat chakra is NOT balanced:

You talk too much! You can be over opinionated or even verbally abusive to others when this center is not pure.  You may find that you do not listen to others well and always feel confused.  The feeling of “nobody gets me” may reside here due to the inability to express your truth.  If you feel this way, it is time to turn within and get quie. Let you heart hear your inner voice to become clear.  Lying is the greatest obstacle to a blocked Throat Chakra.  

If you're not living living your truth you can become distorted in self.

The Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra, the fifth chakra, is associated with communication, the ability to speak honestly, to receive and process information, to know and speak our inner truth.

 

It is the center of transformation and change. Signs of an unbalanced Throat Chakra are an inability to express yourself, feeling stagnated, and holding on to unexpressed emotions (which can manifest as holding on to excess body weight too). This can lead to frustration, inability to find the right words or even excessive talking, shyness, sore throat, stiff neck, and addictions like smoking, alcohol and binge eating.

When the Throat Chakra is balanced, we feel creatively inspired and able to express ourselves well. We have confidence in our beliefs and the self-confidence to share them, and the capacity to listen to others and truly hear them as well.

The Throat Chakra’s balance is intimately tied into the health of the thyroid gland, located in the throat area. The thyroid secretes hormones that control your metabolism, so a sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) will make it hard for you to lose weight, maintain energy, warm your hands and feet, or even stay in a positive mood. A hyperactive thyroid also causes severe metabolic and immune system problems. So foods that nourish the thyroid will also nourish the Throat Chakra.

Foods, especially that share colors with the chakras, carry vibrations that can activate or balance your chakras. The Throat Chakra is associated with the color blue.

Throat Chakra Healing Foods: Fifth chakra foods are soothing to the throat and nourishing to the thyroid gland. Those that are blue or deep red in color include blueberries, blackberries, grapes and cherries. Soups, especially those containing vitamin-and mineral- and fiber-containing vegetables, will be especially soothing to the throat chakra. Seaweeds, like kelp or kombu, contain iodine to support thyroid function and have a demulcent action on the throat.

Dairy products and sugar can clog your throat and wreak havoc with your blood sugar as well, so are best avoided. Drink plenty of water, especially first thing in the morning to cleanse your system. Try the herbal sugar substitute Stevia and herbal teas instead of sodas.

Chewing your food consciously and thoroughly will also exercise the Throat Chakra and unleash the nutrients in the food for easier digestibility. Have you ever gulped down a large meal and still not felt satisfied or nourished, but even still hungry? I recommend chewing each bite 20 times, more if you have food allergies. It’s hard to chew and talk at the same time, so I choose to savor at least one meal per day chewing in silence and awareness.

 The Anahata chakra is associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy.  It is the source of deep and profound truths that cannot be expressed in words. Anahata is a bridge between the lower and upper chakras integrating the manifest with the spiritual. \

This Chakra is represented by the color green and it is located-- you guessed it; in your heart center. 

 

 

When this Chakra IS in balance:

You radiate love and compassion for all living things.  When Anahata is open and energy is flowing freely, you are not only loving others, you are also loving yourSELF.  You know when to say when; when you need self-care and nurturing.  All of the seven chakras are important.  No one will say that the Heart Chakra is most important, but it is SO significant.  Most of the worlds spiritual teachings recognize love as the unifying force tying us all together.  

When our hearts are open,  our relationships are harmonious. We  connect to partners, children, family, community, and the world!  We even connect more profoundly with our pets!  Connecting to love connects us to our breath, our essence, our true soul…

You may feel disconnected from the world; unlovable.  The heart chakra can close or become impenetrable due to heart break, trust issues, grief, loss, rejection,

 or any variety of other emotional pains.  

We learn the dynamics of relationships deeply within this energy center. It first begins with the our relationship with ourselves The lesson of the heart is that we must first love and accept ourselves before we can love others, which is sometimes so hard to do.

The Anahata Chakra is situated in the center of your chest, close to the heart. Its mantra is YAM. The color that represents this chakra is green. When your heart chakra is in balance you will feel a great compassion for all living creatures. You will be kind, caring, joyous and outgoing. When your heart chakra is unbalanced you will probably be very negative in your thinking, and may find it very difficult to keep a positive outlook in life. Recipe: Green Juice or Smoothie for Your Heart

To keep the heart chakra spinning and love emanating, here is a quick recipe you can blend or juice:

 

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut water

1 bunch kale (destemed)

1 green apple (I like Granny Smith)

A small piece of ginger

1 half cucumber

 

Directions:

Blend or juice all of the ingredients together. If you juice, use the whole cucumber. You'll end up with a beautiful green juice or smoothie to enjoy!

Unbalanced solar plexus sufferers experience poor digestion and complexion. Processes are either over active or lethargic.  The skin is prone to congestion and sometimes painful breakouts.

Sometimes we experience the complete opposite-- being passive and letting others take control of our lives.  Those with an unbalanced solar plexus chakra sometims feel the need to compare, constantly feeling inadequate to others,  or are harshly judgmental.  We may constantly be measuring others against an idealized standard within our minds and no one ever measures up.

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA FOODS

The solar plexus chakra represents self-esteem and willpower, and governs the stomach and other digestive organs. This chakra is located in-between the naval and the base of the sternum. By strengthening this chakra you will reach a state in which you can shake off your fear of rejection, criticism and of standing apart from the group. By strengthening this chakra, you will be able to create your own, unique identity.

Manipura, sanskrit for solar plexus chakra, also houses a lot of important internal organs and is vital to our health by way of keeping us balanced. If you are experiencing a blocked manipura chakra you could be overly concerned with what others think, fearful of being alone, insecure and in need of constant reassurance. We also harbor feelings of being angry and judgmental when this yellow center of energy is unbalanced.   

There are many foods, herbs and spices which can assist this energy center. Drinking kombucha can assist the digestive organs as well as rices, flaxseed and sunflower seeds. Chamomile, turmeric, cumin and fennel also aid this chakra. Any kind of yellow foods are great to have around. Lemons, bananas, corn and butternut squash are especially good to have on hand for days when the chakra is vibrating at a low frequency.

Recipe: Southwestern Butternut Squash

 

Ingredients:

1 butternut squash

1 cup of cooked black beans

1 cup corn

Small onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 yellow or red bell pepper, diced

1 bunch green onion

1/2 teaspoon cumin

1/2 teaspoon chili powder

1/2 teaspoon fennel

1/2 teaspoon turmeric

Vegan pepper jack cheese

Cilantro, salsa, and /or avocado for topping

 

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Halve and seed your squash, and then hollow out each side just enough to form a shallow boat. Brush the squash with some coconut oil and roast with the meaty side facing down for 30-40 minutes.

Meanwhile, sauté your onions and garlic in a pan until slightly brown. Add bell peppers and spices, and sauté for about 5 minutes or so. Add beans and corn and green onions then stir. Sauté a few minutes longer and remove from heat.

Remove squash from oven and stuff it with your filling. Top with some vegan cheese and and any other topping, return to oven for about 5-10 minutes. For the kiddos top with some vegan ranch dressing. Enjoy!

The second chakra, our sacral chakra, is a beautiful color orange. Called Svadhistana in sanskrit meaning "sweetness”-- this energy center is located between your tailbone and your belly button. 

 

 

When this Chakra is OPEN:

 Your feelings flow freely and you can express yourself without any problems! You have great self confidence, you know your strengths and can handle anything that life throws at you, a go with the flow attitude. You have no problems with your sexuality, and are very much open to intimacy (you certainly don’t shy away from it!). You have a Great Passion for Life and want to live it to it’s fullest, experiencing every day as a gift from God.

 

When this Chakra is NOT OPEN:

You may experience a fear of pleasure and deny yourself from the things that can make you feel good! (And you’ll make up any excuse not to have something you really want). You will probably lack creativity, feel sluggish, lazy or suffer from chronic fatigue disorder and have a weak sex drive. “Fitting in” with people may rule your daily interactions and you will find it hard to be your true or authentic self. You can’t manifest what you desire because your thoughts and emotions tend to lean towards negativity.

 

Overactive sacral chakra:

If you have an over-active sacral chakra you may tend to be over emotional, creating drama over people or events that happen in your life.  You’ll probably have an unhealthy emotional attachment to people and will become out-of-sorts if someone doesn’t show up on time or if your plans don’t work out. Sexual addiction may be a problem if you are in a relationship or not taking proper caution with your partner(s). Mental, emotional or physical tension of muscles will be another sign that things aren’t in balance.

This is the chakra that keeps our energy dynamic and flowing. It is connected to emotions and creativity and is known as the sacral or svadisthana chakra. The sacral chakra, located in the lower belly, is supported by the water element and is in an eternal state of movement and change. A healthy sacral chakra translates into being able to “go with the flow” of life and the ability to move without judgment as your creative expression calls you. When this chakra is balanced, it is easier to express yourself and to be in tune with her emotions, creativity, senses and dreams.

Eating properly can help this chakra to thrive and, in return, help you to be more in tune with what you want most in life. A healthy sacral chakra vibrates at a frequency similar to the color orange. Orange foods provide the vibration needed to help balance this chakra. Nutritionally speaking, orange foods usually contain relatively high levels of carotenoids: a nutrient that can protect against free radicals. To assist this chakra, and help it spin, here is a Mexican Pumpkin Soup recipe that has that vibrant orange color, uses herbs that assist the chakra and leaves room for you to be creative in the kitchen while making it. 

 

Recipe: Mexican Pumpkin Soup

 

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 bunch of green onions

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

4 cloves of garlic, minced

4 cups vegetable broth

1 15-oz. can pumpkin or squash

1 15-oz. can black beans

1 tablespoon fresh chopped cilantro

A drizzle agave

1 cup brown rice

 

Directions:

Heat the coconut oil in a soup pot and toss in the onions and spices. Add the garlic, slightly browning first, then add the rest of the ingredients into the pot and bring to a high simmer; cover, and lower the heat; simmer for twenty-five minutes until the rice is cooked. Top with vegan sour cream and vegan pepper jack cheese.

Other Nutrition for the Sacral Chakra:

The 2nd chakra is partly about desire, and when it’s off balance, we can attempt to fill the resulting void with a ‘quick fix’ of sweet satiation.

 

Instead take notice of emotional eating habits and ask your body, in particular your sacral chakra, 'What would satisfy your desire?'  

 

Healthy snacks for our sacral would be; almonds, cinnamon, strawberries, melon, coconut, oranges, mandarins, mangos, carrots, sweet potatoes  and

LOTS of water.

Class review: 

The root chakra is the basis of YOU!  This chakra is the color RED and called the Muladhara in sanskrit which means “root support”.  This chakra is the first of seven energy centers within and around you and it connects you to the physical world. This is the energy that holds us in our bodies and when it is blocked we are not grounded. 

 

When this chakra is NOT in balance you may feel disconnected to the world around you and even your physical body.  Common symptoms of a root chakra blockage are; extreme fears, anxiety, unorganized, unable to focus, trust issues, depression, money issues and unable to create healthy boundaries. The physical signs of a blocked root chakra are cracking teeth, bone issues, adrenal glands, colon and immune issues.  All these physical symptoms can be helped and healed by clearing the emotional blocks. 

 

When your root chakra IS balanced you feel safe and secure in the world, connected to your roots (family, tribe) and you trust that all your basic needs are taken care of effortlessly.  When a root chakra is properly nourished you feel comfortable with your body and your relationships are solid.  Money issues become a partnership of sharing your gift for reward exchange.  You know who YOU are.

ROOT CHAKRA 

 ROOT CHAKRA FOODS

Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra (Muladhara) forms our foundation and is the building block on which all other chakras rest. Associated with the color red and the symbol of the four-petal Lotus flower, the Root Chakra deals with feelings of security, trust and survival as well as with the connection we experience with our physical body and its nourishment.

When this chakra is in balance we feel grounded, strong and secure and have a sense of inner security that allows us to trust in the universe. If this chakra is blocked a person may feel emotionally explosive, manipulative or may lack energy. Physical problems can include kidney weakness, stiff lower back and muscle spasms. 

So when we think root chakra, we want to focus in on grounding. Adding in foods like: carrots, potatoes, parsnips, radishes, onions and garlic, and anything else that roots itself, can have a soothing effect for our root chakra. 

Dandelion Root tea can be a great way to end a day that has left you feeling a little disconnected, and it's caffeine free!  

A healthy root chakra vibrates at the color red. Therefore, red foods provide the vibration needed to help balance the root chakra. Nutritionally, red foods usually have high levels of vitamin C–a nutrient utilized by several body parts that the root chakra oversees, like bones, teeth, skin and adrenals. Some red foods you could try are tomatoes, strawberries, apples, pomegranates and cherries. 

 

Recipe: Kale and Mushroom Stuffed Potatoes

Here's a grounding recipe I love to make when I feel a little unsettled or shaken.

 

Ingredients:

4 potatoes

Grapeseed oil

1 1/2 red onions

2 cloves of garlic

1 cup kidney beans

1 cup of kale

1 cup of mushrooms

Parsley, salt and pepper for seasoning

 

Directions:

Heat over to 350 degrees

Wash 4 potatoes of your choosing, I used russet but you could also you sweet.

Poke holes and coat with oil of choosing, I used grapeseed for high temperature cooking.

Add a little salt and pop in the oven. Times may very, as you know when it comes to potatoes. I say about an hour.

Meanwhile, sauté 1/2 a red onion and the garlic cloves until clear. Add in the kidney beans and sauté for about three minutes. Then add in the kale, mushrooms, and one chopped red onion. Season with a little parsley, salt and pepper.

Once the potatoes are done, slice down the middle and combined the mixture into the middle of the potato. Pop back in the oven for just about 10 minutes while its still warm–but not on–just to allow the flavored to soak in.

Serve while warm and enjoy!
